General Questions about breathalyzers
A breathalyzer is a simple device that is used to measure the blood alcohol concentration in your blood stream by measuring a breath sample. The sensors that are used in these handheld breathalyzers are either semiconductor oxide sensors or more accurate fuel cell sensors. Fuel cell breathalyzer models use a tiny electric current to measure the amount of alcohol in your breath, compared to the semiconductor which uses a reaction to measure your BAC. For more information on this subject visit our page on how a breathalyzer works.
What is blood alcohol concentration or BAC?
The blood alcohol concentration is a measurement for the percentage of alcohol in a person's blood. This number is usually expressed in parts per million (ppm) or calculated into a percentage such as 0.08%. When you use a breathalyzer this number is most commonly displayed in 2 to 3 significant digits as a percentage of alcohol in your blood stream.
Many studies have proven that trying to trick a breathalyzer into producing a lower reading is almost impossible. Myths have always been circulating on tricks like using breath mints, batteries, pennies and even mouthwash to fool a breathalyzer. The plain and simple fact is you can't fool a breathalyzer into producing a low reading. The only way to accomplish this is to not drink and then you can drive, sober. Remember to never drink and drive and you won't have to fool a breathalyzer.
Am I safe to drive if the breathalyzer reads I'm below the legal limit?
This problem is where many people can get into trouble. While breathalyzers have become increasingly accurate in the past decade you should still use them only as a screening device for the presence of alcohol. Since your body metabolizes alcohol at different rates you could fine when you first start to drive but later measure above the legal limit. Be smart and be safe, have a designated driver or stop drinking and wait to drive.
How can I tell if my breathalyzer needs to be calibrated?
Having your breathalyzer calibrated can depend on many different components. Visit our breathalyzer calibration page for more information.
How are personal brethalyzers different from professional breathalyzers?
The major differences between these two types of breathalyzers are the types of sensors used. The personal breathalyzer uses a semiconductor oxide sensor which has a slightly large margin of error but is still surprisingly accurate. As for the professional breathalyzer, which uses a fuel cell sensor is the highest and most accurate sensor on the market. For more a more in depth look visit our page discussing the types of sensors used.
